The Place

Settled in the 1800’s, Pouch Cove is a small town of 1,500 people located on the east coast of Newfoundland, twenty kilometers north of St. John’s, which is Newfoundland’s capital city.

Location

Originally a fishing community it is now principally a dormitory town for people working in the city and home to a large retirement population.

It is at the northern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the eastern edge of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

First To See The Sun

The Town whose motto is “First to see the sun” has a children’s playground area, a park with swimming facilities, a small library and blueberry picking grounds. It hosts a convenience store, take out, a garage, a pharmacy, liquor agency and a few other small businesses.

The East Coast Trail, long a popular route for hikers, runs through Pouch Cove, and continues both north and south along almost the entire eastern coast of the Avalon Peninsula. Nearby Marine Park offers great camping facilities.

The Weather

The weather is quite unpredictable, and while Newfoundlanders think of The Rock as having a moderate maritime climate, visitors are surprised by the coolness and almost constant wind.

In the spring there are icebergs in the bay, and during the summer, humpback and minke whales populate the waters along the shore.

The fall has the most consistently good weather, and in the winter, the heavy seas are a sight to behold.

City of St. John’s

The nearest city is St. John’s has a population of 200,000 and has an international airport (YYT). It has all the retailers and food outlets that you would find in any North American city. It is the seat of the provincial government and hosts the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN).
